Oakland County continues dog census for 2017

Is your dog licensed?

The Oakland County Animal Control and Adoption Center will conduct its annual dog census to remind residents that it’s state law for dogs over the age of four months to be licensed.

Through late August, 15 census workers will make their way around the county, stopping at homes where signs of dogs have been exhibited but records indicate there is no license for that home.

If your dog is not licensed you will get a courtesy ticket and information on how to get a license. You will get a postcard reminder if you do not apply for a license within 15 days.

Dog licenses ensure that the animal is up-to-date with its rabies vaccinations. Licenses keep people safe and make it easier for people to recover a dog that has run away.

Dog licenses must be obtained by June 1st of each year. Dog owners who do not do so by that date are considered delinquent.

To obtain a dog license

  • Your dog must have an up-to-date rabies shot
  • Licenses are good for one calendar year (January through December) or three calendar years
  • You can obtain a license through your local city or township hall, veterinarian or Oakland County Animal Control and Adoption Center, 1700 Brown Road in Auburn Hills, by dropping off the license application along with a valid rabies vaccination certificate.
  • From Jan. 1 through June 1, licenses cost $15 for male and female dogs and $13.50 for county residents over the age of 65. This cost is $7.50 for spayed/neutered dogs and $6.75 for county residents over the age of 65.
  • After June 1, all licenses cost $30.
  • You can order a license online at land.oakgov.com/OPLS/MainIndex.aspx
