Weekly Trash/Recycling Pickup

The basics

Our regular pickup day is Tuesday.

Trash must be at the curb by 7:00 am on pickup day.

Please remove emptied containers by 7:00 pm on pickup day.

Trash and recycling bins must be stored INSIDE your garage -- not outside!

Free 65 gallon recycling bin -- One free per household from GFL. Additional charges apply for additional bins.

Holiday Pick Up Schedule -- If your pick-up day falls on or after a holiday during the business week, curb-side service will be pushed back one day.  Those Holiday shall include:  New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  (If one of the these holidays fall on a weekend, your pick-up day will not change)

Therefore, as long as our pickup day is Tuesday, service will always be delayed one day for Memorial Day and Labor Day weeks because those holidays are always on a Monday.

Payment Information -- Trash pickup fees are NOT included in your annual KNIA dues. You must pay GFL directly for services.

Complaints and Concerns -- West Bloomfield Township residents and businesses with complaints or concerns regarding recyclables or waste hauling pick-up (i.e., GFL WASTE HAULING COMPANY) should call Township Supervisor Steve Kaplan’s office at 248-409-1581.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR WEEKLY PICKUPS

BROKEN GLASS – must be wrapped in several layers of newspaper and marked “Broken Glass,” then set BESIDE trash bin–never inside.

PORCELAIN PRODUCTS – such as sinks, tubs and toilets can cause serious injury if jagged edges aren’t taped and marked.

LATEX PAINT – must be transformed from liquid to solid by adding kitty litter or sand, then allowed to harden. Lids must be removed. To dispose of oil-based products, consult your municipality for special days they accept hazardous waste.

PAILS, BUCKETS, TUBS – and other receptacles capable of holding rainwater pose a drowning hazard to small children and pets. Place these inside bins, not beside them.

APPLIANCES – must have doors and lids removed before placed curbside, as they pose a hazard to children, who could become trapped inside.

MEDICAL SHARPS – including syringes with disposable needles or lancets, must be safely enclosed in a puncture-proof container (i.e. coffee can or heavy-duty detergent container) secured with a lid, and labeled “Medical Sharps.”

SHARING THE ROAD – GFL drivers and loaders are instructed to be careful and respectful of other moving vehicles. If you observe a problem, please inform GFL at 844-464-3587.

HAZARDOUS WASTES – are capable of causing a fire or explosion, especially when subjected to the intense pressures placed upon them when squeezed into the rear ends of our trucks. Never place the following in your trash or recycle bin: ammunition, antifreeze, fuel, oil, lacquers or anything considered or labeled dangerous, flammable, combustible, poisonous or corrosive.

West Bloomfield Code of Ordinances

The following is from the West Bloomfield Code of Ordinances, Chapter 10 - Community Development, Article II - Anti-Blight, Section 10-18 - Causes of blight, blighting factors enumerated, Paragraph 3 as retrieved on 2/11/2018

Other paragraphs and sections of this blight ordinance deal with junk vehicles, building materials, damaged buildings, vacant buildings, incomplete structures, swimming pools, stagnant water, and firewood.

Residents should review these ordinances and consult the West Bloomfield Township Code Enforcement Department if there are any questions or concerns.

(Paragraph 3) Junk, trash and rubbish. The storage or accumulation of junk, rubbish or refuse of any kind, except as provided herein. The term "junk" shall include parts of machinery or motor vehicles, unused stoves or other appliances stored in the open, remnants of wood, metal or any other materials or other cast-off materials of any kind whether or not the same could be put to any reasonable use. On properties used for single-residential purposes, domestic refuse originating from such premises may be stored in such a manner as not to create a nuisance for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days. The refuse shall be stored in suitable containers so as to protect it from wind, rain and animals and shall be shielded from view of adjacent areas except when placed at the property line for removal on the day of removal. The proprietor of the premises shall provide for removal of all domestic refuse at least every thirty (30) days and more often if necessary to prevent the creation of a nuisance. In any area used for business or multiple-residential purposes, domestic refuse originating on such premises may be stored for a period not to exceed ten (10) days in such a manner as not to create a nuisance. The refuse shall be stored in appropriate watertight, commercial-type containers, shielded from view of adjacent areas. The proprietor shall provide for weekly removal of all waste, trash, rubbish or refuse of all kinds and more often if necessary to prevent the creation of a nuisance. The proprietor of business or multiple-residential premises shall keep the premises, including parking lots and rights-of-way adjoining the premises, free of junk, trash, rubbish, debris or refuse of any kind and shall provide containers for discards for public use.


In summary -- Always secure your in appropriate containers. Shield your containers from view by others except when set out at the curb for trash pickup days. (Usually, this would mean keeping them inside your closed garage.) Visible debris or junk of any kind on your property for ANY reason (including weather or animals) should be removed promptly by the homeowner or resident. 

Yard Waste

Yard waste is picked up separately from your solid waste and transported to an approved compost facility which then reuses it.

Must be curbside by 7:00 am

Usual yard waste pickup season is early April through early December

  • 2018 yard waste pickup begins the week of March 27 and ends the second full week in December

Allowed

  • garden waste, leaves, lawn cuttings, shrubs & tree trimmings
  • in paper yard waste bags
  • 50 lbs max per can or tied bundles of branches 4 ft or less in length

Not allowed

  • any flammable or explosive (ammunition, antifreeze, fire extinguishers, gasoline, lacquers, oils, poisons and corrosives)

Solid waste may not be combined with yard waste. Use separate containers.

  • Separating yard waste, solid waste, and recycling items a few feet from each other at the curb will help GFL drivers manage the pickup process more quickly and accurately.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off & Electronic Recycling Events

Note: These events are a service of West Bloomfield Township, not GFL. Contact the Township for information about the event. Contact GFL for general recycling information.

Events are held in the Spring and Fall for West Bloomfield residents only. An ID showing WBT residency (drivers license, etc.) is required.

A wide variety of materials are accepted including: glass, plastics, household chemicals, lawn and garden chemicals, paint, insecticide, batteries, electronics, computer components, small appliances, and more.
